THE BARRIER TO CREATIVITY
It is within the second key brain action, processing incoming signals, where creativity is prevented (Perry, p. 1- 4). Within this key action, the brain categorizes and immediately reacts to familiar experiences which in turn blocks creativity and prevents the generation of new and creative ideas. Categorization is "the tendency of the brain to take shortcuts" (Berns, Gregory. 2008. p.3).
In order to overcome this, we must have a balanced interaction between perception, categorization, attention, and novelty. As Gregory Berns stated in his article Neuroscience Sheds New Light On Creativity "creativity and imagination begin with perception". It is necessary to create new visual wiring in order to promote the imagination of new ideas. The idea is to thwart these existing categories in order to promote imagination and hence creativity. Two ways to do are to “think outside the box” and to ask “what if” questions.
